St. Martin, Martinique and Guadelope

The French Caribbean mixes a laid-back West Indian lifestyle with French chique, style and cuisine. You probably won't eat better anywhere in the islands. Each French island is a "departement" of France and the currency (for all practical purposes) is the Franc. Here you will find the best wine in the Caribbean

St. Martin/St. Maarten at 37 square miles is the smallest land mass in the world to be divided between two governments - Dutch St. Maarten and French St. Martin. Although there are two separate governments, visitors cross between the two sides without any restrictions.
The island is known for its shopping, dining, casinos, and spectacular beaches.
Marigot is French St. Martin's capital and largest city. The atmosphere is charming and refined with plenty of European flavor. For a great view of Marigot and its harbor, make the steep climb up the steps to Fort Louis.

Long Bay, St. Martin

Orient Bay, St. Martin

Gourmets will want to include an evening or two in Grand Case. This small town on the French side is considered to be the restaurant capital of the Caribbean. Its waterfront restaurants such as Le Tastevin offer some of the finest cuisine in the region.

The island has great beaches on both sides of the island. Some of the beautiful beaches include Long Bay (Baie Longue), and Orient Bay (Baie Orientale). Orient Bay is a large, festive beach with clothing optional areas.

Guadeloupe is shaped like a large butterfly with Riviere Salée, a mangrove type river, separating the two islands.
Grand Terre is the eastern low land with small villages, sugar cane plantations and awe-inspiring cliffs on its north-east side. Located on the far-east end, you can hike to the top of Pointe des Chateaux and enjoy a breathtaking view of the entire island of Guadeloupe. Base Terre is the western, largest island with a tropical rain forest overlooking a lush world of rivers and the highest waterfalls in the Caribbean.

The beauty of Guadeloupe

Guadeloupe Your catamaran base is at Marina "du bas du fort" which is located in the centre of activity in the colourful and lively Creole town of Pointe a Pitre.
A perfect place to cruise South to the picturesque Isle des Saintes and Dominica, on to the tropical splendor of Basse Terre, Grande Terre and Marie Galante, and eventually Martinique. Travel North to the island of Montserrat and Antigua, St. Kitts and Nevis and ultimately St. Martin.

Martinique is the largest of the Windward Islands and is surrounded by beautiful white sandy beaches and flowers. It also provides excellent snorkelling and diving. In the north and the centre of the island discover tropical forests and cool down under picturesque waterfalls. In the south much of the land has been planted with sugarcane, pineapples, and bananas. The capital, Fort de France, is very cosmopolitan with interesting places to view the island's culture and history.

The ruins of St. Pierre The pleasant small town from where your sailing adventure will begin is Le Marin. You can explore this island for a week or two with excellent and varied anchorages enjoying delicious French cuisine served in the local restaurants.
If you intend to sail mainly around the island take a day or two to explore the fascinating city of St. Pierre, prior to or at the conclusion of your charter, located at the foot of the 4,583 foot-high volcano called Mount Pelée. In 1902, the volcano erupted and destroyed St. Pierre, which was then called "The Paris of the West Indies".
